Display Unit Bases

CaterKraft builds display unit bases that sit squarely under heated or chilled equipment, with the right strength, height and finish for takeaways, cafes and supermarket counters. From Benoni we measure, make and deliver across South Africa for fixed installations and mobile counters alike.

Built to Carry the Display, Not Just the Weight

Display unit bases are more than a stand under a unit. They carry the working load, hold the display at the correct serving height and keep the front of house looking tidy when the counter is busy. We build bases for heated displays, chilled displays, salad bars and mixed servery lines, with the frame size matched to the equipment above it and the floor conditions below it.

In practice, that means a base that can handle full pans, constant opening and closing, cleaning with water and detergent, and the knocks that come with daily service. We often build to suit 900 mm, 1200 mm, 1500 mm and 1800 mm counter lengths, but custom spans are common when the shop layout has columns, walls or a tight serving window. Where needed we allow for castors, adjustable feet, cable routes and access panels so the unit does not become a headache later.

For coastal jobs or busy township takeaway counters, material choice matters. Stainless steel is usually the safest option because it stands up better to moisture, steam and regular wipe-downs. Mild steel can be used for certain hidden support parts, but we will always advise where stainless is worth the extra Rand because it saves on repairs later.

What Is Included in the Base Fabrication

Each display unit base is planned around the counter top equipment, the serving height and the way staff actually work behind the line. We do not just weld a frame and hope it fits. The base is measured, fabricated and checked so the display sits level and the front skirt lines up properly with the rest of the counter.

  • Site measuring or drawing review for the display footprint
  • Frame fabrication in the chosen metal thickness
  • Top supports and reinforcement where the load is concentrated
  • Levelling feet or castor options where movement is required
  • Cut-outs for drainage, power cables and service access
  • Optional stainless cladding for a clean front finish

We also make allowance for future servicing. If the unit will need compressor access, tray removal or wiring checks, we leave the space open and practical. That saves time during maintenance and avoids stripping the whole counter apart for a small repair.

How We Measure, Build and Fit the Base

We start with site measuring in Benoni, Boksburg, Brakpan, Springs, Kempton Park or Germiston, and we also work nationally when a client sends clear dimensions and photos. A proper measure avoids problems like a base that clashes with a wall, blocks a plug point or leaves no room for cleaning under the counter.

  • Measure the display unit, the counter run and floor level
  • Confirm heights, service openings and any electrical or refrigeration needs
  • Prepare the fabrication drawing and material list
  • Cut, weld and dress the frame in our workshop
  • Dry-fit the base and check alignment before delivery
  • Install on site and make final level adjustments

Most smaller bases can be turned around in 5 to 10 working days, depending on material stock and the complexity of the finish. Larger servery lines, or bases that need cladding and extra access work, may need 2 to 3 weeks. If a client is working to a shop opening date, we will state the lead time clearly at the start so there are no surprises.

Size, Strength and Finish Options That Suit Daily Service

Display unit bases need to be strong enough for the weight above them, but they also need to fit the service style. A butcher-style hot display has different support needs to a chilled deli unit or a self-service bakery line. We build to suit the actual load, with common frame sizes using square tube sections around 25 mm to 50 mm depending on the span and duty.

For a standard takeaway counter, the base height often sits around 750 mm to 900 mm, depending on the display and the counter top. For raised presentation lines we can adjust higher, especially where staff need better access from the rear. We also consider foot traffic on the customer side, because a base that sticks out too far can become a nuisance in a narrow shop.

Finishes can include brushed stainless, satin polish or practical cladding panels for a cleaner front face. Where the counter sits near a busy kitchen, we usually recommend rounded edges and sealed joints to reduce dirt traps. That makes cleaning quicker, especially during load-shedding when businesses are already juggling backup power and shorter trading windows.

Pricing Approach for Custom Counter Bases

We price display unit bases according to size, material thickness, finish, site conditions and whether the unit needs cladding or castors. A simple support frame costs less than a fully dressed counter base with service access, internal bracing and precision cut-outs. That said, we keep the pricing practical and clear because most operators need to compare value, not guess at hidden extras.

Once we have the dimensions and the intended equipment, we can quote on labour, materials and installation separately or as one figure. For larger rollouts, such as a group of takeaways or a food court fit-out, we can price the full batch together so the client sees where savings come from. We also explain any trade-offs up front, for example whether a lighter frame is suitable or if a heavier section is needed because the display is deeper than usual.

Payment terms depend on the order size and whether the base is a one-off or part of a larger project. If your shop is in a mall, a roadside site or a municipal area with stricter access rules, we factor that into the installation plan as well. It saves delays on delivery day.

Care, Cleaning and Maintenance Intervals

Display unit bases last longer when they are cleaned properly and checked at regular intervals. Stainless steel does not need much fuss, but it does need the right treatment. Avoid abrasive pads, strong bleach mixes and standing water around seams. Wipe down at the end of each shift, then check that the feet, fasteners and support points are still tight.

  • Daily: wipe food splashes, steam marks and spill points
  • Weekly: check level, doors or access panels and any loose fixings
  • Every 3 months: inspect welds, castors and load points
  • Every 6 months: review sealant, finish condition and service openings

If the base sits in a coastal area or a kitchen with heavy steam, we suggest a more regular check. Salt air and constant moisture can shorten the life of lower-grade fittings. For businesses in Benoni and the East Rand, we usually see the best results when the base is inspected during scheduled equipment cleaning so small issues are caught before they become downtime. A quick service now is cheaper than a full rebuild later, and that is just common sense.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

Can you make a display unit base to match an existing counter?

Yes. We can measure the current counter and build the base to match the height, width and finish, so the new display sits neatly with the rest of the line.

Do you work on heated and chilled displays?

We do. The base is designed around the unit above it, including access for cables, drainage and service points where needed.

How long does installation take?

A standard base can often be installed in a few hours once on site. Larger counters or units with cladding and service access may take longer, especially if level adjustments are needed.
